Pistol and Rifle Match

CO2 from George’s pistol
condensing at below freezing temperatures
The morning fog lifted
revealing a landscape coated with frost.
It was too cold for the chronograph.
It really was too cold for CO2.
After
shooting indoors in October, November and December, it was time to shoot
outdoors.
Not to be slowed down by the severe winter
cold, we scheduled both a pistol and a rifle FT match.
The
pistol match, at 20 degrees, was the last gasp for liquefied CO2.
George’s Crosman 2300 was laying down a
contrail like a B-52 at 40,000 feet.
Ray Carter and Ron Roberts shooting Crosman
1377s pumped up their guns for each shot and got their usual performance
even in the mid-winter cold.
“The Pellets are dropping like stones, so
we will have to aim high,” said George Gardner.
My TAU had to come up 10 clicks to get on
the target at 20 yards.
Even though the velocities were low, George
did knock down one of the farthest targets of the day.
We weren’t able to measure the velocity.
In the severe cold and with the dim, winter
sun close to the horizon the chronograph would not work.
